After a healthy dose of ribbon hunting on Vindictus, I fired up Age of Conan. It’s free now after all, and I do enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I have 3 character slots instead of the 2 promised to free players. Moreover, I could choose my character slots instead of the game choosing them for me. This meant I could pick the characters I wanted. In fact, I was able to choose my Tempest of Set even though that class isn’t available to free players.
That’s classy stuff, Funcom. It’s a very good start to being free.

YAY BOOBIES
It wasn’t long ago when Funcom announced that Age of Conan was transitioning to a free-to-play hybrid model this summer. Just a month later and it looks like Age of Conan is making the change. The Age of Conan website is down with the word unchained written across the logo. Considering how long it takes most games to transition, it’s refreshing to see one turn it around in about a month.
Combat in MMOs differs from game to game. Some games use a traditional system of combat where the player has an abundance of spells and abilities lined up in several hotbars like in World of Warcraft. With cooldowns and global cooldown, players are limited to certain abilities depending on when they last used it. For the interim, the player must let the character auto attack. On the other hand, some games use active combat with positional attacks and active blocking mixed with spells and abilities like in Age of Conan.
- This will be a fresh start server, no transfers.
- You will only be allowed one character on this server. Your reputation will mean something on this server!
- There will be no guards on this server. Your only protection from other players will be your allies, and your own wits and skills.
- PVP will be re-enabled in the early optional Tortage areas.
- There will be a player looting system from PVP. We haven’t decided on the details here, and it probably won’t be looting from a players equipped inventory, but may include some combination of items from their regular inventory and ‘generated’ loot.
- We may amend other PVP related systems as we see fit, pending testing.
